Winter 2000 After Boris' return to The Screech Owl Sanctuary with Nadyezhda he made an excellent recovery and his improved sight enabled him to concentrate on life with Nadya. They have become good companions to each other and earlier this year he dug her a scrape in the ground. Siberian Eagle Owls nest on the ground and it is up to the male to prepare a site for his mate. Nadya inspected the scrape but apparently she did not respond to his advances and appears to be rather shy. So, as yet, there are no little Boris and Nadya's, but he is making all the right moves in bird terms and we will have to hope that she overcomes her shyness and responds to his nest-building activities. She should think herself lucky, most women despair of their menfolks' nest-building attempts! Nadia has taken to perching alongside Boris when they feed and they seem to be quite content with each other as companions but they haven't made any further moves towards mating. Boris now seems to have settled down completely since his operation which was a total success. If there is any further news regarding the flutter of little wings we will bring this to you in due course. You can visit The Screech Owl Sanctuary's web site at www.owlsanct.freeserve.co.uk and contact them by e-mail on cscreech@owlsanct.freeserve.co.uk. We are very pleased to be a corporate sponsor of The Screech Owl Sanctuary who do fabulous work in the rescue and rehabilitation work with owls. The sanctuary has been in existence now for 10 years and has admitted over 300 owls in that time. If you would like to help them please contact them direct. Please mention us when you do so. Congratulations on their 10th anniversary.
This photograph of a barn owl in flight was taken by Paul Evans on the evening of 17 February as it flew past his garden in Herefordshire. A magnificent sight and photograph. Spring 2003 Although Boris had tried hard and dug Nadia a scrape in which she could nest she had rejected his advances and they had not mated. Boris was then introduced to Pushkin, another female Siberiam Eagle Owl, and they fell in love instantly. Caroline and Tom Screech say that they have never seen two owls so besotted with each other. During the initial courtship between Boris and Pushkin Nadia became ill and whilst she was in hospital Boris and his young friend did what young couples do and Pushkin produced a clutch of eggs in early 2002. Sadly these were not fertile although she carefully sat and incubated them for the 35 day duration whilst Boris took food to his mate and looked after her. Early in 2003 Pushkin laid another clutch of eggs and after incubating them Boris and Pushkin are the proud parents of twins. Both parents and little owls are well. And Nadia? When she recovered from her operation she was introduced to Kaisa who is a very elderly European Eagle Owl and they have become good companions. |
