Just in case we doubted that this was all about ophthalmology, we took delivery of the new operating microscope from Zeiss. This, like much of the theatre equipment, is hung from the ceiling, leaving the floor free for movable tables, trolleys and chairs, and people and patients of course.

18 March 2002

The microscope housing and blue control panel is attached to the ceiling and the actual microscope eyepiece and lens is attached to the bottom of the arm which comes off that (next to the blue control panel).

The ladder is optional. We will explain its function and also the microscope's use at a later stage.

18 March 2002

The microscope housing is slowly raised up the locating rods by the ingenious method of extending the arm whilst the head is fixed. This causes the base to raise upwards as it thinks the arm is moving relative to the base which is normally in a fixed position. It weights something over 200 kgs.

18 March 2002

The operating microscope unpacked from its crate. In this picture it is upside down and the square base with all the electronics will eventually be attached to the ceiling from where the microscope will hang.

Andrew Hill "welding" the joints in the vinyl which covers all floors, walls and ceilings in the theatres, consulting rooms and kennels.

The vinyl was heavy stuff, each roll weighing approximately half a tonne. One roll was knocked over one day - they were awfully cross as they had to pick it up again!

The ongoing saga of the rabbits - part of 550 metres of rabbit proof fencing installed. (It also goes a long way underground, but we aren't saying how much just in case they find out and try to dig further down than that.

10 March 2002

Spaghetti Junction ain't got nothing of this place. Somebody said they would tell me how many miles of wire we have here but I haven't heard so I hope that aren't still measuring it.

Dave making a fine job of the pillar at the end of a wall around the rear of the building.

09 March 2002

Geoff Yemm scuffling the ground in front of the clinic with the pond in the background. This will probably be seeded when we have finished building.

The view from the south-east showing the front of the hospital and Geoff scuffling the ground to level it and break it up.

07 March 2002

Andrew Hill and assistant attaching the vinyl to the walls and ceiling. It's heavier than it looks and this is hot heavy work.

07 March 2002

The adhesive is applied to the ceiling prior to the vinyl being offered up and stuck in place. Backbreaking stuff.

07 March 2002

This is the vinyl on the rollers ready to be attached to the ceiling. Each roll of vinyl weighs about half a tonne and getting a roll on the rollers is a work of art in itself.

07 March 2002

The supports for the planting shelf in the reception area is finished. These just have to be covered and then plastered, and, of course, planted.

04 March 2002

The generator arrives. A great day as we will now be able to see what we are doing here!

The oil tank goes underground to hide it away and leave space for other more important items elsewhere.
