Dear Friends, colleagues and owners The Clinic Now into our sixth year in our state of the art eye hospital we are really happy to be working in an ideal environment for us and for your visiting clients with their pets. Many visitors ask what we would have done differently with the build and we can honestly say nothing. We did have the original plans two years before deciding on the site giving us plenty of time to include many modifications before building started. You can still see a pictorial record of the build, archived on this site. Any veterinary colleagues wishing to see the building or discuss design aspects are very welcome to contact Paul Evans.
Eye Veterinary Clinic from the west The Eye Veterinary Clinic Team One of our reasons for keeping the new clinic in the Leominster area was our desire to retain as many of our previous staff as possible and we are delighted that proved to be the case. In the last year we have built our teams even further. The Clinicians John Mould has joined us as Clinical Director. He holds the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Ophthalmology and was previously at Glasgow University Veterinary School. Johns third year resident, Rick Sanchez who holds the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology, also moved down from Glasgow increasing the clinical staff to five veterinary ophthalmologists, making us as strong a team as anywhere in the country. Rick is close to his final European Diploma examinations and we wish him every success. These examinations require a major commitment in study and research time. Rick joins our existing Certificate holders Lorna Newman and Emma Hayton-Leeas staff ophthalmologists. For you and your clients it means service in depth with sufficient cover for us to be able see urgent cases on the same day if required for which there is no extra charge.
Operating theatre 1 with Paul Evans operating and Julie Carpenter assisting Support staff Practice Manager Eileen Davies continues to keep us on the straight path, guiding us through the COSHH, H&S and employment regulations with which you will be only too familiar. Clare Morris has joined us on Reception assisted at the desk by one of our four nursing staff so that we can identify urgent cases and arrange same day appointments where necessary. Jo Wall VN is our Head Nurse supported by Mellissa Amies VN and Sarah Whittaker VN and assisted by Julie Carpenter who is responsible for our resource management. Our aim is always to give your clients the same welcome and service that they receive at your own practice. New Services Out clinics For some years it has been our policy to run out-clinic services for easier access and shorter journey times for your clients. Initial assessments and re-examinations can be performed at a clinic closer to the clients home with surgery performed at Leominster where we have invested in the best available facilities. It is a system which has benefited all parties. We will continue our long established regular visits to:
Details of these clinics together with printable location maps can be found on our website click here. Ocular pathology service John Mould ran an ophthalmic pathology service at Glasgow for some years. We are now able to use this expertise to provide an ophthalmic pathology service from the Eye Veterinary Clinic where we have equipped a specialist laboratory. There are several situations where examination of an enucleated eye can provide valuable information for the future management of the patient and we know from past experience that there is a demand for such a service from primary care and specialist clinicians. We will offer a premium service with rapid reporting of the macroscopic findings, along with a digital image of the eye by e-mail immediately after the examination, followed by histology as soon as it is available. We think that this will be a valuable service to clinicians in the whole country. Look out for a separate flier on this subject. Vitreo-retinal surgery Another exciting development at Eye Veterinary Clinic relates to our recent major investment in the equipment and in training time to be able to offer vitreo-retinal surgery for detached retinas, a first in the UK veterinary field at this time. Paul Evans spent time last winter in Canada and in the United States on sabbatical with Dr Joe Wolfer and Dr Sam Vainisi from Toronto and Chicago respectively. Dr Vainisi is recognized as the world leader in this field. He travelled to the UK recently to spend a few days at our hospital to help us set up the equipment and lead our practical training. As an international expert we were delighted that he agreed to speak to an invited group of our colleagues for a half day advanced ophthalmology seminar on this subject. Mr Rob Johnston who is an MD vitreo-retinal surgeon from the Cheltenham Hospital Trust joined us to speak that day and he is planning to assist in our theatre for our initial cases. CPD at the EVC Everyone needs a title! We have started the ball rolling with two meetings in May. We held the advanced ophthalmology seminar on canine retinal surgery coinciding with Dr Sam Vainisis visit. This was followed by a one day Veterinary Ocular Ultrasonography Workshop which received very high ratings from the delegates. We believe there is a demand for good quality CPD in ophthalmology from specialists and non-specialists alike. Our air-conditioned conference area with digital projection facilities has proved itself an excellent venue for small to medium-sized audiences. We will build on these two days and will circulate information about future meetings and courses. We will circulate a questionnaire to seek your views for topics and best times to run meetings and workshops. In the meantime we welcome your views and suggestions. These exciting developments maintain Eye Veterinary Clinic as a centre of excellence in veterinary ophthalmology. Our aim is to provide a service tailored to you and your clients. We are always happy to discuss how our existing and new services match your needs and we welcome comments and feedback. We will be summarizing our services in information leaflets to be mailed very soon. They will also be made available on line at on the web site fr viewing and download. Meantime do telephone, fax or e-mail us if there is anything you would like to discuss or like us to consider. Best wishes from Paul Evans, Principal John Mould - Clinical Director, Lorna Newman, Emma Hayton-Lee and Natasha Mitchell our veterinary nurses: Beth Davies VN, Kate Spitxmaul VN, Sarah Whittaker VN, Julie Carpenter, and also Jo Wall VN and Mellissa Amies VN both of whom are on maternity leave. and from Clare Morris on Reception and our Practice Manager Eileen Davies.
